♣ An appreciation post for our friendly neighborhood Tobey Maguire.

It is no coincidence that I bring up Tobey Maguire now, just a few weeks after the opening of the new Spider-Man movie, which I despised wholeheartedly. Yeah, I did, and when I couldn't exactly explain why my opinion had to differ so much from those who love it, a friend of mine casually said to me, "Hey, maybe you're not really a fan of Spider-Man. You're just a fan of Tobey Maguire".

Am I?

I don't know. I mean, I do enjoy his portrayal of Peter Parker more than Andrew Garfield's (but I think this is really just a matter of taste) but, no… I don't think so. The fact is I didn't even know him outside "Spider-Man". But, that simple statement from that friend of mine tickled me anyway. So, I did some research... and here is what I got.

Tobey Maguire is in fact a quite decent actor. He was known for a number of thoughtful, introspective characters in some late 1990s movies that are critically acclaimed, or even Oscar-worthy. That was even before he landed on the box-office hit "Spider-Man" in 2002. In 2010, he was nominated in Golden Globe for his role in the movie "Brothers". And all this time, I only knew him as Peter Parker? Really? Which universe did I live in? From then, my curiosity arose. I spent last weekend marathonly watching some of his best movies.

My first choice went to "Seabiscuit" from the year 2003. Maguire played Johnny "Red" Pollard, a jockey for the American legendary racehorse, Seabiscuit. It is truly heartwarming and inspirational to watch. The movie is about rebuilding your life after being torn apart. It is about holding on to your dream even when you seem not capable for it. It is also one of those movies which can make you really care about the animal in the movie, that is a horse. You feel really happy and you cheer when the horse wins. You feel really sad too when the horse loses or when he is wounded. Maguire also developed a believable chemistry with the horse, which makes every second they share on screen even more touching.

Next choice was "Pleasantville" from the year 1998. Rather quirky, this one. Maguire, bringing along his dorky persona, played a teenager, David, who, through a magical event, along with his sister, are sucked into their television set and find themselves trapped in the black-and-white world of 1950s style TV show where life seems so ideal and perfect. David, who feels unhappy with his real life, secretly enjoys this new society he lives in. But as the innocence in that place slowly fades, David begins to learn that there is no such thing called ideal life, unless we're the one who make it so. Because most of the scenes are in black and white (or partially black and white), visually this movie is a rare and fun experience to watch.

But the fun feeling didn't last long, because my next choice was one of the most depressing (and also one of the best) movies I've ever seen. That is, "Brothers" from the year 2009. Maguire played a marine captain. The main plot is not even something new. A husband, gone missing in war zone. Someone who is close to the husband (here is the brother), trying to take care of the wife and the children. Husband returns home, silent, detached, without affect, and finding out his own children would rather be with their uncle than him. He is also convinced that there is a romance going on between his wife and his brother. Like I said, nothing special. What makes it great is the performance of the actors and actresses, even the child actresses did an amazing job. Though in the beginning I felt that Maguire playing a marine is some sort of a miscast, as the movie progressed I got the idea that he is in fact a perfect fit to portray the role. He captured the damage, pain, and alienation underlying his character so genuinely. A must-see if you like watching movies with intense emotional experience.

The roller coaster ride of emotion was ended by "The Cider House Rules" from the year 1999, which is more of a lighthearted one. It's a great relief to watch an easier-to-enjoy movie after the emotionally-draining "Brothers". Maguire played an orphan who decides to leave the orphanage in hope of fulfilling the dreams of seeing the outside world. He delivered the combination of idealism and naivety of a young man in good portion. The movie has its moments of realism, and most importantly, it has real sweet romantic moments, which I cannot get from the other three.

Personally, I find it interesting, the way Tobey Maguire brings his characters to life. Although it is not uncommon to hear some people judge him as a flat and boring actor who always acts in the same way in every movie. To me, Maguire is just a very subtle actor. He rarely tries to be over-the-top. He prefers to let the character come out naturally and not play for the melodrama. Maguire doesn't need to overact at all. Instead, he is likely to let the audience see what is going on inside him simply by the look of his crystalline blue eyes, or by the movement of his jaw line. This is why his characters almost always look calmed down. But when it was really needed for him to lose it, he proved to be able to do a respectable job too.

Jim Sheridan, the director of "Brothers", said it the best way,
"He appears like a swan on the surface, and the audience likes him and trusts him. But there's a real [expletive] edge to him as well… In close-up, you can tell there's a lot going on in his head, but he's a bit of a poker player because you're not exactly sure what he's thinking."

So maybe next time, if I hear someone commenting about Tobey Maguire, I will make sure they know that he truly is a great actor to be a fan of. It's a pity that younger generation may never understand how adorable our Tobey Maguire's friendly neighborhood Spider-Man was.

♣ Hair essentials.

Hello! It's been sunday and hopefully me and everyone having a lovely weekend in the sun!

I thought it would be a good time to mention some products or stuffs that have already become my bestfriends. I've been using Pantene Anti-Dandruff for years. Actually my hair is oily but when I use shampoo for oily hair, my scalp is going to be itchy, my hair is too dry, and hair natural oil will come out  later. Since until today I haven't found any shampoos for my oily hair that also makes my scalp not itchy, I use Pantene Anti-Dandruff instead. As long as I'm dilligent wash my hair every two days, oil will be easy to handle.

Although my hair is oily, I try to treat my hair so that it's healthy by putting hair vitamin, Makarizo Hair Recovery. I used to not use it, I used another brand but since I realize that I like cutting my hair short, my hair vitamin whose packaging is capsule is not practical. It happens because one capsule is too much for my short hair. Makarizo Hair Recovery's packaging is much better. I can use as needed, the rest is stored securely in the packaging. Unfortunately I use the tube than the spray bottle that is for thin hair. I'm going to make a note to buy the spray as soon as it's empty. And now since I've dyed my hair, I must take care of it religiously by using hair mask. I use Makarizo Hair Energy with Kiwi Extract.

The others are headband, hair clip, and hair tie. Oily hair is not good for your face. So I use headband and hair clip for preventing my hair causing more acnes in my face. Especially when it comes to the day where I'm going to wash my hair in the afternoon. Hair tie is for make my hair neat so that doesn't bother me when I'm working. I don't know with you but for me, it's interesting to see short bob hairstyle with short pigtails :)

♣ Before the big day of what it seems to be undergraduate thesis exam.

As a college student who is in process of finishing undergraduate thesis, I stay inside my house a lot recently. There's nothing more that I could do but stay. And go to campus to fulfill another whatever it needs before the exam. But that's all, nothing more.

To kill time, I usually sit in front of my Toshiba Satellite L630 and browse something. Or go to cinema after forcing certain friends to accompany. Or go to book sale. Or go to computer exhibition. Or treat myself by buying me a meatball whose price Rp 12.000,00 which after I think it again, very pricy for a bowl of a meatball while I can pay Rp 6.000,00 for another bowl with better taste.

I'm just trying to balance my life I guess. Besides, I don't do that everyday.

♣ The Amazing Spider-Man, what part of "amazing" escapes your understanding?

Not too long ago, I have expressed my bittersweet anticipation towards Spider-Man's 2012 reboot movie "The Amazing Spider-Man", more bitter than sweet though, basically complains about the movie even before it came out. Because of that, I feel the obligation now to (try to) objectively present my opinion after actually seeing it.

Like I've stated on my previous post,
1) I am indeed a fan of Sam Raimi's franchise, and
2) I don't read the comics nor watch the cartoons, I simply love the previous movies very much to the point that the Spider-Man character himself has grown to be my favorite superhero of all time, and
3) despite all that, I was still very eager to see "The Amazing Spider-Man" in the big screen anyway.

So basically while reading this you will get
1) unavoidable endless comparison to Sam Raimi's trilogy, and
2) whether this movie is more accurate or inaccurate to the comics is beyond my knowledge, and finally
3) boy did I set my expectation high. Too high. I mean, how could I not? Everybody keeps buzzing about it.
Is it really that great? Oh I am completely ready to move on at some point. R.I.P. Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, then? Or maybe not? Because apparently Maguire kept haunting me during those two hours I spent in the theatre.

Really, the first feeling I felt right after watching this movie was the urge to rewatch the 2002 Spider-Man movie, simply to look for what's been missing in this new one. I gave it a chance, you certainly can't say I didn't, but but but… just but. "It's supposed to be great but...". There is a lot of 'but' here. I honestly don't know what's wrong with this movie. It really feels like "The Amazing Spider-Man" is trying too hard to be just different but the result is this movie lacking everything. It started with a big idea but that idea didn't go that big. It attempts to be darker, but not dark enough. It tries to be fun, but not fun enough. Every single good thing comes in halfway, they never live up to their full potential.

♣ Album recap: Razia's Shadow A Musical (2008)

Artist: Forgive Durden
Release: 28 October 2008
Label: Fueled By Ramen
Genre: Musical

When an indie pop-punk band decided to go experimental and created a full-fledge musical album, I would definitely check that out. And when almost 4 years later I'm still having a regular listen to the album, I think hey, I should probably refresh people's memory about this. Or you know, in case you haven't heard of it, here we go...

"Don't you ever feel like you've been destined for something bigger than your skin?"

Thomas Dutton was the sole member of Forgive Durden when this fantastic album was recorded. So yes, you can say he's the man with the vision, along with the help from his brother Paul Dutton and Rudy Gajadhar (former Gatsby's American Dream drummer) who adds steady drum throughout the musical. To bring Razia's Shadow to life, Dutton summoned the help of many talented vocalists to contribute a voice to a character in the musical. Some are from popular bands, some are from bands you may not hear much, but that is unimportant because they all did a great job, with their each unique and strong vocal giving soul to every line they sing, to every song they're in. Aaron Weiss (mewithoutYou vocalist) lends his "crispy" voice to the story as a narrator, fearlessly nails the part, and adds one more favorite aspects of the album.

Razia's Shadow tells the story of a world divided in two by the selfish actions of a powerful and egotistical, yet insecure angel, namely Ahrima, whose action was encouraged by an evil spider named Barayas. Toba the Tura then was sent to hold Ahrima responsible, banished him to live in the ashes (The Dark) while the rest of the angels traveled to a better place (The Light). A hundred years later, a younger prince of The Dark, namely Adakias, felt dissatisfied with his life and decided to leave the kingdom to go searching for The Light, where he fell in love with a princess from the kingdom of The Light, named Anhura. It was their bravery to fulfill their destiny, their true love and sacrifice that eventually could reunite the world back as one. Sounds cheesy? Well, it does. It's a musical, what do you expect. It's supposed to be cheesy and ended happily ever after.

When entering Razia's Shadow, we are met with an orchestra of horns and strings, creating the scene and tone of the musical, it's nearly guitar-less. Though the music may not for everyone's ear, once you enjoy the Disney animated classics or musical theater this is a breed of work that you will surely appreciate. "Genesis" is the perfect opening track which has succeeded in making me want more to hear. "The Missing Piece" is the most catchy tune, I can almost imagine it being played over and over in radio. Some most outstanding --if not eccentric-- singing performances were pulled by Barayas the Spider (voiced by Max Bemis from Say Anything) in "The Spider and the Lamp" and Doctor Dumaya (voiced by Shawn Harris from The Matches) in "Doctor, Doctor", accompanied with heavy orchestrated fast drum beat, one would easily believe both songs come from one of Tim Burton's movies. The closing track, "The End and the Beginning", features a nicely-conducted vocal battle ala classic musical theater material between Adakias (voiced by Thomas Dutton himself) and his older brother, Pallis (voiced by Brendon Urie from Panic! at the Disco), then the beautiful soothing voice of Princess Anhura (voiced by Greta Salpeter from The Hush Sound) perfects the track like a cherry on top.

In first listens, the album is deliciously interesting. Speaking of lasting power, it surely has the quality to maintain a tight grip on my playlist rotation for years ;) You can see the complete track list and character list here.
